Careers in English

An English degree is an excellent pre-professional major for fields such as law and medicine and provides the necessary platform for the M.A. and Ph.D. in English for students who wish to enter secondary or university teaching. As an English major, one can go into the fields of publishing, editing and advertising. Businesses often hire English majors because of their intellectual versatility and command of the language. There are opportunities, for example, in merchandising, retailing and personnel management. The research and writing skills developed as an English major can lead to careers in public relations and government service. A B.A. in English is, in fact, one of the most flexible and useful of degrees.

High school and pre-preparation

Any student admitted to the university may elect to major in English. Students who enjoy reading and who have taken a standard college preparatory curriculum, including four years of English, and who hold a GPA of 2.5 or higher, should do well in English.
