Introduction

This four year programme is offered to students who wish to develop a high level of linguistic proficiency in two languages and a strong desire to gain an insight into and understanding of contemporary life of the Spain and Japan and their languages. The programme includes a year of study abroad and gives equal weighting to each language.

In your first year, our objective is to develop rapid competence in oral and written skills in ab initio students or to consolidate and further develop fluency, accuracy and general competence in ‘AS’ level and post ‘A’ level students. Throughout the programme students will study modules that allow them to develop their knowledge of the history, economics, current politics and social issues relevant to Spain and Japan.

Throughout your studies you will continue to build up your linguistic skills in Spanish and Japanese through group activities with native-speaker exchange students and translation classes. In your second year options on business environment and communication specific to each language are also available, which will prove extremely useful should you decide to pursue a career in business in either country.

The third year of study is spent abroad. Students complete one semester at a university or Higher Education institution in both countries with which the language subject group has exchange agreements. This gives students the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language and culture of both countries, which will prove invaluable in terms of developing fluency in both languages.
What career opportunities are available?

A wide range of career opportunities is open to graduates with a high level of competence in a language, so your chances of gaining successful employment are greatly improved if you are highly competent in two!

Language graduates often find employment as interpreters, translators, and teachers. Other graduates often go into business, in areas such as marketing, media, publishing and banking. And others find employment within the civil service.

Bearing in mind that employment rates for language graduates are above the national average, prospects for graduates are pretty good!
