ENGLISH 021
ENGLISH FUNDAMENTALS
(NDA) 3 UNITS
Prerequisite: Appropriate placement results.
Lecture 3 hours.
Class graded credit/no credit.
English 21 is a course in reading and writing designed to strengthen the student’s basic communication skills, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence construction. Greatest emphasis is placed on the writing of competent paragraphs and short essays.

ENGLISH 028
INTERMEDIATE READING AND COMPOSITION
3 UNITS
Satisfies the English requirement for an AA degree.
Prerequisite: English 21 with a grade of “C” or better, or appropriate English placement results and successful completion of ESL 6.

Lecture 3 hours.
English 28 is a course in reading and writing designed to strengthen the student’s ability to use basic communication skills, including grammar, spelling, punctuation, and sentence construction. Instruction will include the assignment of full-length expository and argumentative essays.

ENGLISH 101
COLLEGE READING AND COMPOSITION I
(UC:CSU) 3 UNITS
Prerequisite: English 28 or ESL 8 with a grade of “C” or better, or appropriate English placement results.
Lecture 3 hours.
English 101 is a course in reading and writing to improve the student’s skill in thinking clearly, reading carefully, and writing effectively; the organization and composition of expository material, including the research paper, are emphasized.
Acceptable for credit: UCLA: English 203; CSUN: English 155.

ENGLISH 102
COLLEGE READING AND COMPOSITION II
(UC:CSU) 3 UNITS
Prerequisite: English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.
Lecture 3 hours.
This course is designed to develop critical think-ing, reading, and writing skills beyond the level of English 101. Students will develop critical thinking by writing strong arguments based on poetry, drama and fiction, as subject matter. Students will learn to identify premises and con-clusions and recognize patterns of faulty logic in developing arguments. They will learn to distin-guish between deductive and inductive reasoning and will demonstrate this and utilizing research strategies
Acceptable for credit: UCLA: English 204; CSUN: English 255.

ENGLISH 240
LITERATURE AND THE MOTION PICTURE I
(UC:CSU) 3 UNITS
Prerequisite: English 101 with a grade of “C” or better.
Lecture 3 hours.
English 240 is a comparative course in literature and the motion picture. Stress is is placed on viewing feature, documentary, short subjects, animated, and experimental films, along with reading literary sources (short stories, novels, and plays) and related critical reviews.
