One of the immediate objectives of the Department of Modern Foreign and Classical Languages is to teach the fundamental skills of listening, speaking, writing, and reading of another language. This objective is focused on students developing the ability to communicate on various levels in the target language and to gain an appreciation of the literature written in that language. Another objective of the department is to convey to students a knowledge and understanding of a different language, people and culture and to give them a method of viewing the world with a broader perspective. The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a full range of undergraduate and graduate courses. While the major emphasis of the Department is literature, we also offer courses in Spanish language, linguistics, and culture, as well as Portuguese language, Brazilian literature and cultural studies. In Spring 2007, the Department received the Departmental Award for Exceptional Teaching and Learning from the Center for Teaching Excellence, University of Kansas. The Department recognizes the integral relationship between teaching and research, and all members of the faculty are both active scholars and dedicated teachers. Students desiring to be certified to teach Spanish at the secondary level (grades 6-12) are to declare themselves as Spanish majors and education minors. Advisement is a joint responsibility of the Spanish and education programs. Students must complete requirements for the major, requirements for the Secondary Education program and for the Teacher Education Program (see Education). Other Information: Language Placement: Students who have studied Spanish in high school will take a placement exam. Language placement exams will also be administered for students who have acquired a level of proficiency in Spanish in a non-classroom setting (e.g. native speakers, home use of Spanish or
Students wishing to obtain a minor in Spanish must successfully complete a minimum of 12 semester hours in Spanish at the 204 level or above.
