The mission of the Department of English is to equip the student with skills to communicate clearly, logically, and effectively through reading, writing, speaking, and listening. To develop these skills, the Department offers courses designed to acquaint an English major or minor with great minds of the past and the present at the same that his own creative, critical, and interpretive skills are being shaped and nurtured. Freshman and sophomore courses assure every student of contact with knowledge and skills expected of any educated person.

The mission of the Department of Foreign Languages is to enable the student to understand, speak, read, and write a language other than his/her own; to lead the student to some familiarity with the literature written in the language; to foster appreciation of the history and culture of the country whose language is being studied; and to promote understanding of these cultures today in our community and nation.

If you study for our degree in Modern Foreign Languages with Education, you can achieve a high level of proficiency in two languages and get to know the culture of the countries where those languages are spoken. Our degree also provides a grounding in linguistics, and educational theory and practice.

- Spanish
- English as a foreign language (not available to native English speakers, or to those who have been educated in English)

Literature and Languages offers courses in writing, literature, linguistics, and foreign languages. These courses support a variety of undergraduate degree and certificate options, a master's degree program, and the University's Liberal Arts Core requirements.

Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures offers a graduate program leading to the Master of Arts degree in foreign languages and literatures. The M.A. program with classes in literature, linguistics and pedagogy allows for considerable breadth of study while offering a well-balanced degree plan. Students may choose to complete their degree in either French or Spanish.
