This program is for full-time students whose language is not English. Helps prepare students enrolment in ABE, Trades and Vocational, Academic/Technical programs, TOEFL, the workforce or students in their own personal development.
Interpreter Training Program at Pierpont Community and Technical College is a 2-year immersion program experience training students to become qualified in sign language interpreting. Prior to admission to the Interpreter Training program, students are required to complete a one-year immersion certificate in the American Sign Language Communication Program. After meeting, or concurrent with the prerequisites, students make formal application to the Interpreter Training Program. All students must have a minimum ACT Reading score of 18 or Compass Reading score of 75 to apply. Students must be admitted to the Interpreter Training Program to enroll in any ITTP course. English was established in 1967. The department also offers graduate study programs leading to the M.A. and Ph.D. in such fields as language teaching, literature, and linguistics. In cooperation with the Division of Advanced Programs and Extended Studies, the department also offers programs for students who desire to advance their education but have difficulty making it through the regular university education system. For such students, the department offers courses in evenings, on weekends, and during summer months. The department aims at training the students with better language skills and to teach them how to put the languages into diverse kinds of use. The curricula are divided into three groups : Literature and Culture Translation and Interpretation Applied Linguistics (including English Teaching) With the theoretical background and full experience of practicum, the students are required to accomplish a professional and multi-level training curricula. The students will graduate with a full set of academic training, human disciplines and international visions.

The Major of Language and Cultures aims at a systematic understanding of human culture of language questioning the fundamental meaning of the human spirit and culture. It consists of three groups of subjects – comparative culture, applied linguistics, and Japanese language and culture, for the purpose of accurate understanding of areas and world societies, relative evaluation of Japanese culture from the global point of view, training international communication skills such as English, and training information process ability of individual language and areas. Like the Chinese major, the Japanese major includes extensive language training and interdisciplinary course work. This major permits a concentrated study of the standard Japanese and encourages an acquaintance with Classical Japanese and Classical Chinese (Kanbun). In addition to language training, this major focuses on the humanistic fields set within a broad social and historical context. For courses associated with this major, see the Catalogue. The Japanese major is more geographically and culturally specific than is the Asian Studies major, and they require considerably more advanced language training in Japanese. The Ph.D. degree provides advanced training in field linguistics and documentary linguistics, in the primary areas of the field in sound, syntax, and meaning and in second language acquisition, as well as training in linguistic computing and experience in presenting original research in professional venues. Students will pursue and develop in-depth expertise in at least one area of specialization.
