The global development modules will develop your understanding of development and give you the opportunity to to explore a range of development issues, including trade, debt, famine, environment and migration issues and the relationship between the developed and developing worlds.

The year spent abroad and the language modules will develop your linguistic skills in a professional or business context. All core language skills including translation and interpreting are included in the course. The history, politics, culture, art and current affairs of Spain are also studied.

You will have access to a wide range of facilities including a resource packed library open 24/7 to aid the development of your language skills – Languages Resource Area, language laboratories, computers and satellite television viewing in several languages.

Language Modules: Language in Use; Language for Group & Team; European Context; Linguistic & Personal Skills

Global Development Modules: The Challenge of Development; Introduction to Peace and Conflict Studies; Applied Global Ethics; What is Politics?
Level 2
Language Modules: Language in Use; Language for Group & Team; Language in Context; Observing Culture

Global Development Modules: The Political Economy of Development; Managing Development; Development in Practice; Theories of Conflict Resolution

The Language in Use module will prepare you for your year abroad and will include education; accommodation; food; health; media; cultural differences and shock; job applications and CV writing
Level 3
Language Modules: Language in Use; Applied Language Skills; Dissertation (Double Module)

Global Development Modules: Economic Transformation in the Third World; Current Issues in Development; Option Module 1; Option Module 2
Teaching/Learning
Teaching methods used within the course are diverse and add variety to your learning experience. They include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and practicals that will vary in their application. The use of X-stream will feature in a number of modules as a web-based learning tool.
Assessment
A variety of assessment methods will be used including reports, essays, examinations, presentations, web based material, reflective reports about your time abroad and dissertation. This mix enables you to get the most out of your course and develop skills that you can use in the workplace. The final year dissertation will be written in Spanish and will contain both primary and secondary research, which will further develop your transferable language and professional skills.
Placement
In the third year of the course you will experience an exciting year abroad studying at a partner university, working in an international environment or as an English Language Assistant.

This year will provide invaluable experience for when you graduate and will further develop your fluency which will help you with your studies in the final year and completing your dissertation.

You will be allocated a tutor who will provide support and guidance during your year abroad.

This course prepares you for work in these areas by offering study of your chosen language and the important field of global development in equal proportion. Concepts such as development, peace and conflict studies, applied ethics, and globalisation are studied. You will also develop practical language skills and cultural awareness.
