The global development modules will develop your understanding of development and give you the opportunity to to explore a range of development issues, including trade, debt, famine, environment and migration issues and the relationship between the developed and developing worlds.

The year spent abroad and the language modules will develop your linguistic skills in a professional or business context. All core language skills including translation and interpreting are included in the course. The history, politics, culture, art and current affairs of Spain are also studied.

You will have access to a wide range of facilities including a resource packed library open 24/7 to aid the development of your language skills – Languages Resource Area, language laboratories, computers and satellite television viewing in several languages.

Teaching/Learning
Teaching methods used within the course are diverse and add variety to your learning experience. They include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and practicals that will vary in their application. The use of X-stream will feature in a number of modules as a web-based learning tool.
Assessment
A variety of assessment methods will be used including reports, essays, examinations, presentations, web based material, reflective reports about your time abroad and dissertation. This mix enables you to get the most out of your course and develop skills that you can use in the workplace. The final year dissertation will be written in Spanish and will contain both primary and secondary research, which will further develop your transferable language and professional skills.
Placement
In the third year of the course you will experience an exciting year abroad studying at a partner university, working in an international environment or as an English Language Assistant.

This year will provide invaluable experience for when you graduate and will further develop your fluency which will help you with your studies in the final year and completing your dissertation.

You will be allocated a tutor who will provide support and guidance during your year abroad.

BA Hons Languages with International Business at Leeds Metropolitan University

The main Language you will study is post A-level and you can study French, German, Spanish or English as a Foreign Language. The second language is from either post A-level or beginners and you can choose from German, Spanish or Italian.

The year you spend abroad and the language modules studied will enable you to develop your practical language skills in a business context. All core language skills, including translation and interpretation skills, are included in the course. The history, politics, culture, art and current affairs of the country whose language you are learning are also studied. The international business modules will develop your knowledge and understanding of issues facing international business operating on a global scale and the core business functions.

There is also the opportunity to customise your studies through the selection of option modules with the option to study a second and third language.

Work-based learning is an award-winning module which requires you to work in small groups to use your language and business skills to complete a market research project on behalf of a local company. This will demonstrate to potential employers that you are able to apply your language skills to a real-industry project and provide industry experience. In the third year you will also be required to write a dissertation in your target language which will provide evidence of your language skills and fluency, plus your ability to apply it to a variety of projects, which will improve your employability.
