Major in German Studies at Lewis & Clark College

The German Studies major consists of courses in language, literature, and culture to prepare students for graduate study and for careers in teaching, bilingual education, translating, interpreting, and other areas in which foreign language skills are applied.

In cooperation with Reed College and Willamette University, Lewis & Clark annually offers a full-year program at the University of Munich, which fulfills the German Studies overseas study requirement.

The main Language you will study is post A-level and you can study French, German, Spanish or English as a Foreign Language. The second language is from either post A-level or beginners and you can choose from German, Spanish or Italian.

The year you spend abroad and the language modules studied will enable you to develop your practical language skills in a business context. All core language skills, including translation and interpretation skills, are included in the course. The history, politics, culture, art and current affairs of the country whose language you are learning are also studied. The international business modules will develop your knowledge and understanding of issues facing international business operating on a global scale and the core business functions.

There is also the opportunity to customise your studies through the selection of option modules with the option to study a second and third language.

Work-based learning is an award-winning module which requires you to work in small groups to use your language and business skills to complete a market research project on behalf of a local company. This will demonstrate to potential employers that you are able to apply your language skills to a real-industry project and provide industry experience. In the third year you will also be required to write a dissertation in your target language which will provide evidence of your language skills and fluency, plus your ability to apply it to a variety of projects, which will improve your employability.

DEUT 2116 N – The Age of Goethe and Schiller

Examines the development of German literature from Sturm und Drang to Romanticism with an emphasis on the writings of Goethe and Schiller. A study of selected literary texts and cultural texts. Students may not retain credit for DEUT 4206, 3206, 4207, 3207 and 2116. (lec 3) cr 3


DEUT 2216 N – German Cinema

Course description

This course allows students to acquire a language qualification while completing their undergraduate degree.
